I believe your support of these kids will impact their lives forever. They are much more likely to lend a hand now that they are seeing how rewarding it is to live selflessly. It's so exciting to see kids discovering purpose and learning that they can make a difference right now.
We have so many stories to tell. Some make us laugh and some make us well up with tears. Others give us a sense of righteous anger as we see injustice right before our eyes. Through working to help others and bring them hope, we are also experiencing change.
Today, Jeremy met a little girl at the Fisher School who decided he was her husband. Jeremy was so awesome with her. I wish you could have seen this athletic young man showing compassion and patience as he played with her. She says she has two daddies and two mommies living at her house and talked about one who had gone away because he was giving her mommy "whoopins." She is five years old and has a sassy mouth on her and has already lost so much childhood innocence. Jeremy played with her, laughed and played house. At one point she wanted him to carry her around like a husband would carry a bride across the threshold. He was trying to accomodate her but she decided he wasn't doing it right. She finally made her frustrated demand and yelled, "Hold me like a woman, Fool!" We all got quite a laugh about that one. What an awesome thing it was to see Jeremy being so gentle with this little one who has had such a difficult life already.
I enjoyed watching Jordan working so hard to help. What a strong young man he is! I thought he was going to toss a fridge into a house by himself! It's clear that God is opening up a whole new realm for him and helping him see just how valuable he is.
Our "quiet girls," Dali, Hannah, Nicole and Annie, are blossoming and growing very comfortable. They are joking with other team members, smiling and sharing. This is one of my biggest prayer concerns for this trip. Our next core group is right there. I have been praying that God will knit them together and unite them in purpose.
Our reflection time tonight was sweet. Our sharing time was powerful and our quizzing time of memory verses and trip trivia questions was a lot of fun.
I will head back from my spot here in the McDonald's parking lot and call it a night early since it is only 11:40 (haha). The gang had lights out tonight at 10 but then the church alarm went off at about 10:45! Doh!
We will awake for breakfast and be back on our job sites by 9:00 am. We've had many changes in our teams and have had to be flexible. People have moved here and there.

Three tissues later, I'm done reading all of your reflections--I could only think of how God is pleased with your heart, your work, your thoughts. Thank you, Jordan, for mentioning Romans 12:2--one of my favorite passages. So I want to add the verse that comes right before, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship." I want to encourage all of you to see yourself in this verse, to claim it as yours. You are offering yourself to God as a living sacrifice--as you play with children, carry sheetrock, prepare meals, encourage a team member, mow grass, follow directions of your team leader, paint trim, approach a stranger to start a conversation--this is all worship, and it pleases God.
I'm so very proud of you and I'm praying for God's best for you today as you serve the people of New Orleans and Him.
Love, Sallie
You guys are awesome. Reading your reflections just blows me away. God's doing great things in you and through you! You are often in our thoughts and prayers. Phil B (no I'm not Hannah's Dad ;-)
Good morning, NOLA team!
What a blessing it is to follow your journey and to read about the impact your service is having on the people of New Orleans -- children and adults alike. This morning I was reading Matthew and found 2 verses to share - Jesus told his disciples:
Mt. 18:5 And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.
and
Mt 20:28 ...just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.
I pray today that God will keep you all safe and that He will bless you as you "welcome the little children" and "serve others" in His name.
Love,
Joan
Good morning Katrina team! I didn't have any tissues handy this morning as I read your reflections so I am a mess now. What an encouragement you are to me. God is watching over you. He has His hand of protection on you every step of the way as you have already seen. I am so excited that you are having opportunities to speak with people. It is intimidating talking with strangers in a rough neighborhood. I hope the men are there this morning to receive the donuts and coffee. I pray that small act of kindness will open their hearts even more. It can also be intimidating talking to a 5 year old girl who's upbringing is completely different from your own. It was so neat to read how Jeremy spent time with this little girl. She saw Jesus in you. I pray that today will be an awesome day and that you will see God in everything you do. Cheryl
I have thought of you all so much. I feel like I am actually with you all down there. God says I will never never leave nor forsake you. On Tuesday night at our McDonald's you all touched so many lives up here. The whole Mcdonald's community is talking about your service project. There is not a heart that goes untouched when we do what God has called us to do and that is what you are doing right now. God has sent you ahead to represent our church, His church and you are being blessed as you do His will. May you feel the blessings as you bless others with His love. God Bless You, Mimi
What an amazing group you are! You all are growing in such insight and expereinceing things that will grow and stretch you and hone your testimonies. It was wonderful to read the reflections and I really enjoyed getting a glimpse into the minds of the "quiet kids". God is at work in your lives and touching you right where He feels you need it most.
You all are on my mind constantly. I pray for you many, many times a day....as I know many others are as well. You are well covered in prayer!
Blessings,
Val
I'm not sure how Sallie managed to read this morning's blog entries with only three tissues. I had the spontaneous 'springy' kind of tears that left splatters all over my glasses - very unfortunate indeed.
I can't speak for God, but I do have an inkling that He's overwhelmingly proud of you all. Not only are you sharing Jesus with everyone you come in contact with, but God is also using this trip to conform YOU to the likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ. Bonus.
A verse for you today is from Nehemiah 2:18b (I like how it reads in NKJV). "Let us rise up and build. Then they set their hands to this good work." Build on dear ones.....
Love you loads.
Stephanie
Good morning all! It's hot here. I'm sure you're all hot too. Working in this must be tough. God sees it all. I read in one of my devotions that we (His children) are here for one purpose. To share the Good News of the Kingdom of God with the world. Awesome! You guys are doing it. Thank you! I'm praying for you all. Sarah, hang in there ~ LOVE YOU ALL ~ Linda
Hi there NOLA warriors! It's so great to read about how you are out there serving as Jesus would have served! It goes without saying that we are praying for you - strength and stamina, enough sleep, "cold-weather" bodies that will manage the heat, but mostly effective service as you pour out the love of Christ to the people of that area. "Now thanks be to God who always leads up in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of his knowledge in every place." II Cor. 2:14 Think about that...! Even though you may be sweaty and stinky, you are leaving the sweet fragrance of Christ! So, keep up the great work and great faith! Go, NOLA! (cheerleader pom poms shaking and waving...!) We love you and miss you!
E, L, and I just read through your reflections and I am so thankful for your heart! Elizabeth loves seeing the pictures of all the "houses you are fixing". To explain tears, by reading something from "Daddy & the kids" to a 3 year old is near impossible, it really is so sweet! I have had a whole host of emotions with this trip and today I am thankful not only to you for being His hands, feet, and smile, but also the example you are setting for Elizabeth (and the rest of us). You are making people matter!! Thank you!!! - Jen
PS! Who needs tissues!! I just used one of Luke's blankets!!
Flexibility- I hear it over and over in your blog entries. That is a big life lesson that God is allowing you to internalize this week. I pray that you will remember it all your lives. We get so much more done when we are wiling to just "go with the flow."
Tolerance- that is the really BIG lesson that you are all undoubtedly learning but are too polite to mention. Tired of that perky worker who just won't stop talking? Discouraged by that teammate who never seems to be around when there is a heavy piece of drywall to move? Keep your eyes on Jesus- just think how he felt when he came to earth from heaven and had to live among perky people and often had to handle superhuman tasks alone.
Paul has a good word for us: "As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." Eph 4:1-3
Paul also mentions something about AmTrak in verse 8: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men." Maybe you can explain that verse to us when you return home.
But until then, remember to be flexible, practice tolerance, use sunscreen, and drink lots of water.
Fondly, Holly G
Hi Michael,You have done such a great job. We are both so very proud of you and the entire team. We have been praying for you daily. It will be nice to have you, Scott, and your dad back home. Our love, Grampie and Grammie k
